Why can't I get a real "Verified Buyer" badge on my Shopify reviews?
Shopify no longer ships a built-in reviews feature, so a Verified Buyer badge on your product pages has to come from how you collect and display reviews. Here's what actually works today.
What's going on
Shoppers trust reviews more when they can see the reviewer actually bought the product. A plain five-star comment with no purchase behind it is easy to dismiss as fake or incentivized, and merchants increasingly hear this as a direct objection from customers deciding whether to trust their store.
The catch is that Shopify itself doesn't have a built-in way to do this today. There's no reviews section in the admin, no verified-purchase field on the order that a theme can just display, and no first-party review widget bundled with the platform. Whatever solution you pick has to be assembled from your order data, your outbound email timing, and, usually, a third-party app that ties a submitted review back to a real order before showing a badge.
Why it happens
Shopify used to offer a free Product Reviews app built by Shopify itself, but it was deprecated and pulled from new installs, leaving a gap that the app ecosystem filled instead. That's why almost every current answer to getting verified reviews on Shopify points to a third-party app rather than an admin setting.
Verification is a data-matching problem: to legitimately label a review Verified Buyer, the review app needs to match the reviewer's email or order number against your order history at the moment they submit or are invited to submit a review. That matching logic, plus the request-timing logic of waiting until after delivery rather than right at checkout, is exactly the piece Shopify's platform leaves for apps to handle.
5 ways to fix it
Pick a review app that verifies purchases automatically
Apps built for this (Judge.me, Ali Reviews, Loox, Stamped, Yotpo, Rivo, and others) connect to your order data through Shopify's API. When a review request goes out, it's tied to the actual order and customer email, so a review gets a Verified Buyer badge automatically, with no manual checking on your end. Judge.me and Ali Reviews both have functional free tiers that include verified-badge collection, so this capability doesn't require a paid plan. Try a couple on a development store before committing, since widget speed and theme-block support vary and both affect page performance and how reviews render on Online Store 2.0 themes.
Use Shopify Flow to control when review requests go out
Shopify Flow is free on all plans and lets you build a workflow that fires a set number of days after an order is fulfilled, rather than right at purchase, which is when review requests tend to get the best response and the most useful answers. Most review apps also have their own built-in delay and trigger settings, so you may not need Flow at all. But if you want tighter control, such as skipping customers who filed a return or only triggering for certain product tags, combining Flow with your review app's trigger gets you there without custom code.
Shopify itself no longer ships a native reviews feature
Shopify used to offer its own free Product Reviews app, but it was deprecated and is no longer available to new installs, so there's no built-in reviews object or storefront block that ships with the platform today. If you want reviews on-site with a verified-purchase indicator, a third-party app is currently the practical path for the storefront display piece. There's a workaround for the request-timing piece (Flow or Shopify Email, above), but not for showing badged reviews on product pages without an app.
For low volume, you can do it manually with email and order tags
Filter or export orders by fulfillment status or a saved order tag, send a post-purchase campaign through Shopify Email or your existing sending tool linking to a public review location like Google Business Profile or Facebook, and add a Verified Buyer note yourself when you manually curate testimonials for your site. This avoids app cost but doesn't scale, doesn't auto-badge reviews on your product pages, and means re-checking who has actually completed a purchase every time.
Make sure the request itself is compliant, not just the badge
A verified-purchase label only means something if the emails collecting those reviews are sent properly: base the trigger on fulfillment or delivery status so it counts as transactional rather than marketing, but still include an unsubscribe option to stay within applicable email law such as CAN-SPAM, CASL, or GDPR depending on where your customers are. Most dedicated review apps already handle this compliance layer as part of their sending flow.
Bottom line
There's no built-in Shopify setting for verified-purchase reviews anymore. Shopify's own reviews app was retired, so getting a Verified Buyer badge on your store means either running a dedicated review app, several of which have solid free tiers, or manually curating testimonials yourself, which doesn't scale. Shopify Flow and Shopify Email are useful free building blocks for timing and sending the request, but neither displays reviews on your storefront on its own. This is a case where a dedicated app is genuinely the practical fix rather than a workaround: trial one of the established review platforms against your theme rather than waiting for a native alternative to reappear.
