Why does my Shopify POS app freeze right when I try to take a payment?
Card payments freezing at the register are almost always a network, device, or card reader issue rather than a Shopify bug. Here's how to diagnose and fix it.
What's going on
This is one of the most common complaints from retail merchants during busy periods: the POS app moves fine through the cart, but the moment you tap to take payment, the screen hangs for several seconds, sometimes longer, before the card reader responds or the transaction completes. It's frustrating in the worst possible moment, with a line of customers waiting.
Multiple merchants have reported this pattern independently, and it tends to get noticeably worse at peak trading hours — weekends, holiday rushes, sale events — rather than being a constant, everyday slowdown. That timing is a useful diagnostic clue: a problem that only shows up when your store is busiest points toward shared resources like network, device, or reader getting overloaded, rather than a fixed bug in the POS app itself.
Why it happens
The payment step is the most network- and hardware-dependent part of the whole POS flow: the device has to reach Shopify's servers to authorize the sale while simultaneously talking to the card reader over Bluetooth or a wired connection. Any weak link in that chain — spotty Wi-Fi, a low reader battery, an outdated app build, or too many devices sharing bandwidth — shows up as a delay specifically at this step, even though the rest of the app feels fast.
Peak-hour timing makes this worse for a simple reason: more registers, more staff devices, more background syncing, and often more people on the same store Wi-Fi network are all competing for bandwidth exactly when checkout needs to be fastest. A connection that's fine with one register active can become noticeably slower with three or four running at once.
5 ways to fix it
Check your network first — Wi-Fi congestion is the most common cause
Payment lag is usually a network problem, not an app bug: your POS device has to round-trip with Shopify's servers and talk to your card reader at the same time, over Bluetooth or a shared connection. At peak hours, many stores run several POS devices, card readers, guest Wi-Fi, and back-office traffic on one router, which produces exactly the intermittent lag merchants report. Put POS devices and card readers on a dedicated network or a business-grade router with enough bandwidth, keep each reader close to its device, and avoid pairing multiple readers to one device at once. If you're on a cellular connection, weak signal at the register location can cause the same symptom.
Update the Shopify POS app and your device's operating system
Shopify regularly updates the POS app with payment-flow and card reader fixes, so an outdated app is one of the first things support will ask about. Confirm you're on the latest POS app version from your device's app store, and that your tablet or phone is on an operating system version Shopify still supports — very old iOS or Android builds are a known source of slowdowns. After updating, restart the device and fully close and reopen the app, since a stale session can carry the lag over even after an update.
Re-pair or restart your card reader
A card reader with a weak Bluetooth pairing, low battery, or outdated firmware can noticeably slow down the payment step even when the network and app are fine. Turn the reader off and back on, forget and re-pair it in your device's Bluetooth settings, and check the POS app's hardware settings for a reader firmware update. Keeping a charged spare reader at busy locations avoids losing time to this mid-rush.
Reduce what's running during checkout at peak times
If the lag only shows up during rushes, it's often simple resource contention: multiple registers, background syncing, and other apps competing for the same network and device resources. Close unused apps on the POS device, run large inventory syncs outside business hours, and if you use any custom POS extensions, check with the developer whether they call external services during checkout — a slow third-party call can stall the payment screen.
If it persists, send Shopify Support your diagnostics
If the steps above don't resolve it, Shopify POS offers a way to send diagnostic information to support, which helps them see where the delay is actually occurring — network, reader communication, or payment authorization. This is worth doing especially if several staff or locations are affected, since a report tied to your shop and the exact time of the slowdown gives Shopify's team something concrete to investigate.
Bottom line
There's no single toggle in Shopify POS that fixes payment lag, because in the vast majority of reported cases it isn't a software bug — it's network, device, or card reader health. The steps above (isolating your network, keeping the app and reader updated, freeing up resources at peak times) resolve it for most merchants without installing anything extra. If you've ruled all of that out and it still only happens during your busiest hours, sending Shopify Support your diagnostics is the right next step. BesPoP doesn't offer a dedicated performance app for this, since it's fundamentally an infrastructure issue that a third-party app layer can't override.
