Why doesn't the image/file picker in Shopify remember my saved Files views?
The compact file picker used inside product, page, and blog editors is a stripped-down browser that skips the saved views, filters, and sorting available on the full Files page — so a view you built there won't show up when you're just trying to attach an image.
What's going on
You've spent time in Settings > Files organizing things — searching by type, sorting by date, maybe saving a filtered view so you can quickly get back to "product photos uploaded this month" or "files still missing alt text." Then you go to add an image to a product, page, or blog post, click "Select image," and the picker that pops up is back to a flat, unsorted list with a plain search box. Whatever view or filter you had set up on the main Files page is nowhere to be found.
This isn't a glitch or something you're missing in a settings menu. The picker that opens from inside a product, page, article, or theme editor is a deliberately lightweight, embedded version of the file browser — built for quickly grabbing a single file, not for full library management. It doesn't share state with the full Files admin page, so saved views, applied filters, and even some sort options simply don't travel with you into that modal.
For stores with a large or messy media library, this turns a two-second task (find the right hero image) into a scavenger hunt every single time, especially if you're adding images to many products in a row. It's a recurring complaint in Shopify's merchant community, and merchants who've raised it get told, correctly, that there's currently no way to surface a saved view inside the picker — only workarounds.
Why it happens
The full Files page in Shopify admin is a dedicated management screen: it's meant for uploading, auditing, filtering, and cleaning up your entire media library, so it carries more UI real estate for filters, sorting, and (on list pages generally) saved views/tabs. The image picker embedded in product, page, blog, and theme editors is a different, smaller component reused across many parts of the admin — its job is just "pick one file fast," so Shopify has kept it intentionally minimal: a thumbnail grid and a basic text search.
Because these are separate components rather than the same screen in a smaller window, improvements to one (like saved views on list pages) don't automatically propagate to the other. That's a common pattern across Shopify admin — full management pages and their "quick select" modal counterparts often drift out of feature parity over time.

Search inside the picker with specific keywords or the exact filename
The file picker's search box does work — it just doesn't inherit any saved view or filter from the full Files page. Type distinctive words from the filename, alt text, or the folder-style prefix you use when naming files (e.g. "hero-", "2026-spring-") rather than relying on browsing. If you rename files with a consistent prefix convention when uploading, searching in the picker becomes far more reliable than scrolling.
Do the heavy filtering on the full Files page first, then open the picker
Go to Settings > Files (or Content > Files, depending on your admin layout) and use the search and any available type/date filters there to identify the exact file you need — check its exact filename. Then open the picker from your product, page, or article and search by that exact name. This two-step workaround is the closest thing to reusing a saved view today, since the filter logic itself doesn't carry into the picker.
Keep a lean, well-organized Files library so you don't need saved views at all
Because the picker only offers a flat search with no folders, tags, or saved segments, the most durable fix is prevention: delete unused uploads regularly, standardize filenames before uploading (product handle + variant + size), and avoid uploading the same asset multiple times. A smaller, consistently named library makes the picker's basic search good enough in practice.
Report it to Shopify Support as a reproducible feature gap
This is a real, longstanding usability limitation rather than a bug with a hidden setting — the picker modal is intentionally a lightweight component and hasn't been updated to match the full Files page's filtering. Submitting reproducible steps (which saved view/filter you expected, and where the picker fell short) through Shopify Support or the Community feedback boards is the correct channel if you want it prioritized, since there's no current workaround inside the picker itself.
Use bulk metafield or CSV-based image assignment for large catalogs
If the real pain point is assigning many images to many products (not just finding one file), consider bypassing the picker for bulk work: use CSV product import/export with image URLs, or metaobject/metafield references, to assign images programmatically instead of hunting through the picker one product at a time.
