Do I actually need an app for this, or does Shopify already do it?
A field-by-field breakdown of what Shopify already gives you for free -- line-item properties, variants, media, bundles, metafields -- versus what genuinely requires a paid app.
What's going on
You're setting up a new store, or rebuilding an old one, and every feature you look up seems to have five app recommendations attached to it. Product customization, gift notes, bundles, size charts, custom fields -- it feels like you need to install ten apps before you've sold a single item, and each one is another monthly fee stacked on a store that isn't making money yet.
The honest answer is that a lot of what gets sold as an app feature is already built into Shopify for free, and merchants who install apps first and check the admin second end up paying recurring fees for things they already had. The trick is knowing which category a given requirement falls into before you start searching the App Store.
Why it happens
Shopify's App Store is the loudest voice in the room -- app listings are optimized to show up when you search for a feature, while native admin capabilities like line-item properties or metafields aren't marketed anywhere and only show up if you already know the term to search for in Shopify's own help docs.
Feature requirements also get bundled in merchants' heads. "I need customers to add a monogram" sounds like a product-personalization problem, but it's actually just a text field on the cart (a line-item property) with zero pricing or inventory logic -- there's no natural signal that tells a first-time store owner that distinction, so the instinct is to search "Shopify personalization app" instead of "Shopify line item properties."
5 ways to fix it
Start with line-item properties for any kind of customization or add-on text
If what you need is "let the customer type something" (initials, a gift note, a delivery date, an engraving instruction) or "let them tick a box for gift wrap," that's a line-item property, not a variant and not an app. You add a form field to the product template named properties[Whatever You Call It], and Shopify automatically attaches that value to the cart line and shows it on the order in admin, on the packing slip, and in order emails. It costs nothing, needs no app, and most themes already support adding a field like this with a small snippet in the product form. This alone covers a surprising share of the 'I need an app for X' questions merchants ask.
Use variants and options for anything that changes price, SKU, or inventory
Size, color, material, bundle size -- anything where the choice should affect price, stock count, or barcode -- belongs in Shopify's native product options/variants, not a line-item property. Historically Shopify capped this at 3 options and 100 variant combinations per product; Shopify has been rolling out an expanded options system that raises those ceilings for stores it's enabled on, so check what your admin currently allows under a product's Options section before assuming you're capped. If you outgrow the limit or need option combinations that act like separate products with a shared page, Shopify's own free Combined Listings feature (built into admin, not a third-party app) merges multiple products into one variant-style picker.
Use native product media for anything visual
Multiple images, video, and even 3D/AR models are a built-in part of every product's Media section -- no app needed to add more images, reorder them, or attach a short product video. If you're trying to show "this is what the engraving/color/fabric looks like" you can usually solve it with variant-specific images plus a line-item property for the customization text, rather than reaching for a personalization app.
Check Shopify's own free built-in apps before buying a third-party one
A lot of "do I need an app for X" questions are already answered by tools Shopify ships for free in every store: Shopify Email and Shopify Forms for marketing/signup capture, the Bundles app for fixed or mix-and-match bundles, Search & Discovery for filters and merchandising, and Metafields for any structured custom data you want to display (materials, care instructions, specs) without new fields in code. These live in your admin under Apps or Settings and don't cost anything beyond your existing plan.
Only reach for a paid app once you've confirmed native options don't cover it
Real reasons to pay for an app: you need live inventory sync across many locations with complex rules, a highly specific configurator/builder UI, subscription billing, complex bundle pricing logic, or automation Shopify's admin genuinely doesn't do. Before installing anything, write down exactly which behavior is missing from properties + variants + metafields + Shopify's free apps -- that list is usually much shorter than it first looks, and it tells you precisely what to search for instead of installing three overlapping apps to figure it out by trial and error.
Bottom line
Most of what feels like \"I probably need five different apps\" turns out to be two free, built-in Shopify features -- line-item properties for custom text/options and variants for anything that changes price or stock -- plus maybe Shopify's own free Bundles or Metafields tools. Map your actual requirements against those first; if you're still missing something specific (like a real-time configurator or complex bundle pricing), that's the point to look at a narrowly-scoped paid app rather than guessing upfront, and a general Shopify setup/consulting review can help you get that list right before you spend anything.
