Why can't I log into my Shopify account, or get the verification email to show up?

I can't get into my Shopify account usually means one of three different problems: a login failure, a missing verification email, or a staff permissions gap. Here's how to tell which one you have and fix it.

What's going on

A surprisingly common Shopify complaint has almost no detail attached to it: I can't get into my account, or my email isn't working with Shopify, with no error message, no screenshot, and no indication of what actually happened on screen. It's an understandable way to vent, but it's also why these threads rarely get resolved quickly in forums or on social media, since commenters end up guessing at three or four unrelated problems at once.

In reality, an account access problem on Shopify almost always turns out to be one of a few distinct, well-documented situations: you're locked out of login with a wrong password, an expired session, or two-factor authentication you can't complete; you or a staff member never received the email Shopify needs to verify before granting full access; or you can log in fine but a staff account's permissions don't cover the section you're trying to reach. Each of these has a different, usually free, fix, but you have to identify which one you're actually dealing with before any fix will work.

This matters more for Shopify accounts than for a lot of software, because Shopify treats account security seriously. It may ask for identity verification on a suspicious login attempt, it handles two-factor authentication resets through a recovery-code flow rather than a simple password reset, and it sends automated emails such as verification and staff invites through delivery systems that some business email setups filter aggressively. None of that means something is broken; it just means the next step is different from a normal password reset.

Why it happens

Login failures usually stem from expired sessions, stale cookies, a password that was changed elsewhere, such as by another staff member or during a security reset, or two-factor authentication tied to a device or authenticator app you no longer have. Shopify deliberately makes 2FA recovery a separate path from password reset so that losing your phone can't be used to take over an account.

Missing verification or invite emails are almost always a deliverability problem rather than a Shopify outage. Spam filtering, corporate email security gateways, or SPF and DKIM misconfiguration on a custom sending domain can silently drop automated transactional email before it ever reaches an inbox.

Permissions confusion happens because Shopify staff accounts are scoped by role. A new staff member can complete every login and verification step correctly and still see a stripped-down admin if their assigned role wasn't given access to the specific area, like Settings, Apps, or Analytics, they're trying to reach.

5 ways to fix it

1

Write down the exact error message or screen you're stuck on

Before trying anything else, capture precisely what you're seeing: a wrong-password message, a too-many-attempts lockout, a blank or looping screen, a two-factor authentication prompt, a verify-your-email banner, or an email that simply never arrived. Also note which system is involved: Shopify itself, your store's staff login, or a separate email inbox like Gmail or Outlook. These are three different systems with different fixes, and the generic complaint I can't get in maps to a very different solution depending on which one you're actually facing.

2

If it's a login or password problem, use Shopify's account recovery flow first

From the Shopify login page, use Forgot password to reset it, and try an incognito or private browser window, or a different device, to rule out cached cookies or a browser extension getting in the way. If you've lost access to your two-factor authentication method, a password reset alone won't clear that prompt: sign in with a saved backup or recovery code first, then update or remove the 2FA method from your account's security settings. If Shopify asks you to verify your identity with a photo ID or business document, that's a standard check meant to prevent account takeover, not a scam, so complete it only through the official prompt inside Shopify.

3

If it's a missing verification email, check spam, resend it, then check your domain's DNS

Verification and staff-invite emails come from an automated Shopify address, and they frequently land in spam or get filtered by strict business email rules, especially on Google Workspace or Microsoft 365 accounts with tight security policies. Check spam or junk first, then look in your Shopify admin for the email verification banner and resend it. If you use a custom domain for your business email and nothing arrives after several resends, the cause is often DNS related, such as SPF or DKIM records rejecting Shopify's sending servers, which is worth checking with whoever manages your domain.

4

If none of that works, contact Shopify Support with the specific error you captured

Shopify Support can see things you can't from your side: whether a verification email actually sent and bounced, whether your account was flagged for review, or whether there's a backend issue specific to your account. Open the Shopify Help Center and start a chat describing your issue, or use Contact us if you can't log into any account at all. Have your store's domain, the email address on the account, and the exact error text ready. A vague report like it just doesn't work gets routed through generic troubleshooting instead of to someone who can check your account directly.

5

If a staff account can log in but can't see everything, check permissions instead of login settings

A successful login followed by missing sections, greyed-out settings, or a you don't have permission message is a permissions problem, not an authentication one. The store owner, or a staff member with permission to manage staff, can review and adjust this from the users and permissions area of the Shopify admin. This is a common follow-on confusion after an email verification issue gets resolved: the staff member can now log in, but their role was never granted access to the section they need.

Bottom line

There's no single fix here because I can't get into my account is really three different problems wearing one complaint: a login or authentication failure, a missing verification email, or a staff permissions gap. Shopify's own account recovery and email verification tools handle the vast majority of these for free, and Shopify Support can see backend delivery logs that no merchant or third-party tool can access, so isolate which of the three you're actually facing before spending time on a fix aimed at the wrong one. This isn't an area where a BesPoP app or any third-party app has a role to play; it's a Shopify account issue to resolve directly with Shopify.
