Why does Shopify keep telling customers there's no shipping option for their address?

If checkout shows no shipping options for an address that looks completely valid, the cause is almost always a gap in how your shipping zones, rate bands, or product profiles are set up, not a bug.

What's going on

A customer types in an address that's clearly real — a normal US state, a normal Canadian province, a normal postal code — and checkout tells them there are no shipping methods available, or simply shows no shipping options at all. The merchant checks the address and it looks fine, so it feels like Shopify is broken. It usually isn't: Shopify only offers a shipping rate at checkout when it can find a shipping zone that covers that exact address and has a rate defined for the cart's current weight or price. If either condition isn't met, checkout has nothing to show, and it fails silently rather than pointing at which rule tripped.

This shows up most often right after a shipping setup change — a new product added to a custom shipping profile, a new fulfillment location, a zone edited to add one country but not its territories, or a rate table with a gap in the weight bands. It also shows up with carrier-calculated rates, since a missing weight or dimension on one product, or a carrier that doesn't service a particular address type, can suppress rates for that one order without any visible error.

Why it happens

Shopify's checkout has no fallback rate. It calculates available shipping methods by matching the destination address against your configured shipping zones, then matching the cart's weight, price, or dimensions against the rate rules inside the matching zone. If the address falls just outside a zone boundary, such as a territory that was never added or a postal code range with a gap, or the cart falls outside every defined weight or price band, the result is an empty list rather than an error message pointing at the cause.

The same empty-result behavior happens at the profile and location level: products can be split across multiple shipping profiles, and each profile needs its own zone and rate coverage, while multi-location inventory means the fulfilling location also has to be enabled to ship to that zone. Any one of these layers being incomplete is enough to block checkout for what looks, to the merchant, like a perfectly ordinary address.

5 ways to fix it

1

Audit your shipping zones for gaps first

Go to Settings > Shipping and delivery and open every zone in the shipping profile the affected product uses. Confirm the customer's country, state or province, or postal code is actually inside a zone that has rates defined — it's easy to have a zone covering "United States" that excludes a territory (Puerto Rico, Guam, APO/FPO addresses) or a state you never added. Also check the weight- or price-based rate bands for gaps: if you defined rates for 0-5 lbs and 5-20 lbs but nothing above that, any cart over 20 lbs will show no rates at all. Make sure your top band has no upper limit, or a very high one.

2

Check product-specific shipping profiles

If you use custom shipping profiles, a cart can fail to get rates when it mixes products from different profiles and one of those profiles has no rate configured for the destination zone. Open each shipping profile touched by the cart's items, in Settings > Shipping and delivery, and verify every one has a matching zone and rate for that address.

3

Verify the fulfilling location actually ships there

If you stock inventory across multiple locations, Shopify only offers a rate when the location fulfilling the order is included in a shipping profile that covers that zone. If an item is stocked only at a location whose profile doesn't include the customer's region, or a location that's restricted to local pickup or delivery, checkout will show no shipping options even though the address is valid. Check your locations and the profile-to-location assignments in Settings > Shipping and delivery.

4

If you use carrier-calculated rates, check the data feeding them

Real-time rates from Shopify Shipping or a connected carrier account depend on accurate product weight and package dimensions, and on the carrier actually servicing that address type — some carriers won't quote PO boxes, and some require an account for certain regions. Missing weight data on even one product in the cart, or an address type the carrier rejects, can silently return zero rates instead of an error.

5

Rule out a local delivery or pickup override eating the zone

If you've set up local delivery or in-store pickup for a specific area, check that it isn't scoped so broadly that it suppresses standard shipping rates for addresses inside that radius without offering a real delivery option, and that its coverage lines up with your intended shipping zone rather than overlapping it incorrectly.

Bottom line

In the large majority of cases this is a configuration gap in shipping zones, rate bands, product-specific profiles, or location assignments — all fixable for free in Settings > Shipping and delivery, no app required. Merchants running genuinely complex logic, such as many locations, mixed carrier accounts, or conditional rate rules, tend to be the ones who eventually need a dedicated shipping-rules app; that's a bigger step than a one-time-fee tool, and there isn't a BesPoP app for this category.
