My product reviews vanished after the reviews app I used got deprecated, can I get them back?
If your product reviews vanished after switching away from a deprecated or uninstalled reviews app, here is what is actually recoverable and how to avoid losing it again.
What's going on
A merchant had been using a Shopify reviews app that has since been deprecated or discontinued, and after switching apps, or simply having the old app stop working, the star ratings and written reviews that had accumulated on their product pages disappeared entirely. This is a common and understandably alarming situation: reviews often represent months or years of accumulated social proof, and merchants frequently discover the loss only when a customer mentions it or someone notices the ratings are missing from product pages or search results.
The core issue is that most reviews apps, including Shopify's own legacy Product Reviews app, treat review content as data owned by that specific app rather than as a native, permanent part of core Shopify commerce data the way orders or products are. When an app is deprecated, sunset, or uninstalled, the theme blocks that display the reviews disappear immediately, and depending on the app and how much time has passed, the underlying data may become inaccessible or eventually be purged from the vendor's servers entirely. There is no single Shopify-wide way to restore reviews once that happens.
Whether the data is truly gone or just hidden depends heavily on timing, which app was involved, and whether an export was ever taken. This makes the response somewhat like detective work: checking your own store's data, checking for a prior export, contacting the vendor, and checking web archives are all worth doing, roughly in that order of likelihood of success.
Why it happens
Most reviews apps, including Shopify's own legacy Product Reviews app, store review content as data owned by the app itself rather than as a permanent, portable part of core Shopify commerce records like orders or customers. When the app is deprecated, sunset by its developer, or uninstalled, the theme blocks that render reviews on the storefront disappear immediately, and the underlying data's fate depends on the vendor: some retain it for a grace period in case you reinstall or request an export, others purge it on their own schedule.
Because reviews were never something merchants were routinely prompted to back up, most stores never exported their review data before a deprecation happened, so by the time the loss is noticed, the trail, a CSV export, a vendor support ticket, may already be cold. This is compounded by the reviews ecosystem being fragmented across many competing third-party apps rather than one long-supported first-party feature, so switching apps or having a vendor shut down happens more often than store owners expect.
5 ways to fix it
Check whether the data still exists in your store before assuming it's gone
Uninstalling a reviews app removes its theme blocks and storefront display, but the underlying review content is not always deleted at the same moment. Some reviews apps store data in a way that is tied to your products (occasionally surfaced as metafields), so it is worth checking your Admin's product data and custom data settings before concluding everything is unrecoverable. In many cases the content is simply unlinked from the storefront rather than erased outright.
Look for a CSV export you or a previous developer already generated
Many reviews apps let you request a CSV export, often emailed as a download link that expires after a short window. Check your store's Files section, the admin email inbox, and any shared drive a former developer or agency might have used during a past migration. A one-time export from months ago is sometimes the only surviving copy after an app is removed.
Contact the reviews app vendor's support team directly and quickly
If the app was only recently uninstalled, or is still installed but no longer displaying reviews, reach out to the vendor through their Shopify App Store listing or in-app support widget. Some review-app companies keep customer data on their own servers for a period after uninstall and can restore a display or provide an export, but retention windows vary by vendor and are not indefinite, so it is worth asking as soon as you notice the problem.
Check archived snapshots of your product pages
If no export exists and the vendor cannot help, search the Wayback Machine (web.archive.org) for older snapshots of your product pages, and check any cached versions or your own screenshots or backups from before the reviews disappeared. This will not restore machine-readable star ratings, but it can recover the text of specific reviews so you can manually re-enter the ones that matter most.
Rebuild going forward with a review app that has clear export practices
If the original reviews cannot be recovered, the practical path is choosing a currently supported reviews app and treating this as a lesson for the future. Whichever app you settle on, schedule periodic exports of your review data so a future app change, deprecation, or accidental uninstall does not leave you with no backup at all.
Bottom line
There is no guaranteed way to bring back reviews tied to a deprecated app once the data is truly gone from that vendor's system. The realistic options, roughly in order of likelihood, are checking your own store's data, asking the app vendor for a late export, and searching web archives for the text. Since Shopify has no built-in way to restore reviews once an app's data is gone, the best long-term fix is procedural rather than technical: whichever reviews app you use going forward, export your data on a regular schedule so you are never solely dependent on one vendor staying in business.
