A customer says they left a review on my product page, so where is it?

A customer left a product review, but it's nowhere on the storefront. Here's why that happens and how to track it down.

What's going on

A customer emails or messages you saying they left a 5-star review on your product page days ago, but you can't find it anywhere on the storefront. You check the product page yourself and there's nothing there, or the review section shows older reviews but not the new one. It's easy to assume the review vanished or the app is broken, but in the overwhelming majority of cases the review is sitting somewhere in your store, just not visible, for one of a handful of predictable reasons.

Shopify doesn't have a single built-in reviews system that every store uses. Most merchants run a third-party app such as Judge.me, Loox, Yotpo, Stamped, or Ali Reviews. These apps all follow a similar pattern: a review comes in, gets stored in the app's own database, and only appears on the storefront once it clears moderation and the theme is correctly set up to display it. A break at any one of those steps produces the exact same symptom: review submitted, review invisible.

Why it happens

The most common cause is intentional design, not a bug: review apps often default to requiring manual approval before a submission goes public, specifically to keep spam and abusive content off your storefront. That queue is easy to forget about if you don't check the app regularly.

The second most common cause is theme-related. Review widgets on modern Shopify themes usually render as a block inside the product page template, and that block doesn't always survive a theme switch, a duplication, or a fresh app install. The review can be fully approved in the app's backend while having nowhere to render on the live page.

Less commonly, the issue is a display setting, such as a minimum review count, star-rating threshold, or language and market filter, suppressing the review from view, or a caching issue where the page is simply showing a stale version of the product template.

5 ways to fix it

1

Check the app's moderation or approval queue first

Most Shopify review apps (Judge.me, Loox, Yotpo, Stamped, Ali Reviews, and others) hold new submissions as pending until a human approves them, so nothing goes live automatically. Open the app from your Shopify admin's Apps section and look for a Reviews, Moderation, or Pending tab to see if the submission is sitting there waiting on you. Check spam or rejected filters too, since some apps auto-flag reviews that contain links, all-caps text, or very little written content.

2

Confirm the review widget is still placed on the product page

On newer Shopify themes, review widgets are typically added as a block inside the product page through the theme editor, rather than appearing automatically. If you recently changed themes, duplicated one, published a new version, or reinstalled the app, that block can go missing or land in the wrong spot. Open the theme customizer on a product page, check whether the app's block is still there, and re-add and save it if not.

3

Rule out display settings that hide reviews until conditions are met

Many apps let you hide the widget until a product has a minimum number of approved reviews, require a minimum star rating before showing anything, or only display reviews that match the storefront's active language or market. If this is the product's first review, or it was submitted in a different language than your store's default, the section can look empty even though nothing is actually broken. Check the app's display or settings tab for options like these.

4

Check that the app is still active and the page isn't just showing a cached version

Confirm the app hasn't been uninstalled, paused over a billing issue, or disconnected from the storefront after an update; some apps need their block or script reconnected after a plan or theme change. Then hard-refresh the product page or view it in a private or incognito window, since theme and browser caching can hide a review that has, in fact, already been approved and saved.

5

Contact the app's support if everything above checks out

If moderation, placement, filters, and caching all look fine and the review is still nowhere to be found, it may have failed validation on submission, for example because a required field like an order number or email didn't match, or it may have hit an app-side bug. Review apps generally offer chat or email support and can look up the specific submission on their end to tell you exactly what happened to it.

Bottom line

Most cases of a missing review come down to it sitting unapproved in the app's moderation queue, or the review block having fallen off the product page after a theme change, both fixable yourself in a few minutes without installing anything new. A review-management or reputation app only becomes worth adding if you're dealing with recurring moderation overhead across many reviews, not a single missing one.
