Why is my "you may also like" section empty on every free Shopify theme I try?

An empty "you may also like" section is usually a setup gap, not a broken theme -- here's how to tell which one you're dealing with.

What's going on

I switched to a free Shopify theme and the "you may also like" or "customers also bought" section on my product pages is just... empty. No products, no error, nothing. I've tried more than one free theme now and get the same result -- the section shows placeholder content in the theme editor, but on the live storefront there's nothing there.

This is one of the more confusing gaps in Shopify because recommendations look like they should just work out of the box, but there are actually two different mechanisms sharing that one section -- one automatic, one that requires a manual setup step -- and most merchants never realize the manual step exists.

Why it happens

Shopify's free themes ship with a product recommendations block, but that block can actually draw from two distinct recommendation types: related recommendations, which Shopify generates automatically from order history, product descriptions, and shared collections, and complementary recommendations (often shown as "frequently bought together" style pairings), which stay empty until a merchant manually assigns them, typically through the free Search & Discovery app.

Merchants who install or switch to a free theme reasonably expect the block to populate itself, so when it's wired to complementary recommendations, or when the store is too new or too small for the automatic algorithm to have much to work with, the section renders as blank space with no error message explaining why.

On top of that, a handful of eligibility rules -- products that are sold out, priced at $0, or archived generally won't be recommended -- can silently exclude otherwise-good candidates, and template customizations occasionally drop the recommendations block entirely without an obvious warning in the theme editor.

5 ways to fix it

1

Confirm the recommendations block is actually enabled on the template you're using

Go to Online Store, Themes, Customize, open the product page template, and check that the product recommendations block (often labeled "You may also like" or similar) is still present and turned on. It's easy to lose during a theme switch or when a custom product template is duplicated, and the block also has its own settings, including how many products it should display, that can end up misconfigured. If you're using a custom product template rather than the theme's default, the block usually has to be added there separately -- it doesn't carry over automatically.

2

Set up complementary or "frequently bought together" picks in the free Search & Discovery app

Shopify splits recommendations into two kinds: related recommendations, which Shopify generates automatically, and complementary recommendations, which stay empty until a merchant configures them. If your theme's block is set to show complementary or "frequently bought together" style suggestions, open the free Shopify-built Search & Discovery app, find its recommendations settings, and either accept the suggested pairings or assign products manually. Skipping this step is one of the most common reasons merchants see an empty recommendations block on an otherwise correctly configured theme.

3

Give automatic related recommendations enough order and catalog data to work with

Related recommendations are generated from signals like order history, product descriptions, and shared collections. A brand-new store, a store with very few orders, or a catalog with thin or duplicate product descriptions can give Shopify too little to work with, so the section renders empty or shows weak results. This usually isn't a theme problem -- it improves as the store accumulates sales and richer product content. In the meantime, you can fill the gap by manually pointing a "you may also like" section at a hand-picked collection instead of relying on the automated feed.

4

Check that your best candidate products are actually eligible to be recommended

Shopify excludes certain products from recommendation results regardless of theme -- for example, products that are sold out, priced at $0, or set to draft or archived status typically won't appear. If your strongest cross-sell candidates fall into one of these buckets, the section can look broken even though it's behaving as designed. Restock, reprice, or swap in eligible products to test whether that's the issue.

5

If you need logic native recommendations can't provide, consider a dedicated app

Shopify's built-in recommendation tools handle simple "customers also bought" suggestions and manually curated pairs reasonably well, but they're not built for things like restricting cross-sells to a specific collection, bundling discounts, or behavior-based personalization. If you've confirmed the setup above is correct and you still need more control, a purpose-built recommendations or upsell app is a reasonable next step rather than trying to stretch the native block past what it's designed to do.

Bottom line

Work through it in order: confirm the block and its settings actually exist on the template you're editing, check whether it's configured for complementary recommendations (which need manual setup in the free Search & Discovery app) versus related recommendations (automatic, but dependent on order and catalog data), and rule out product eligibility issues like out-of-stock or $0 items. Most reports of "recommendations don't work on this theme" come down to one of these, not a defect in the theme itself. If you've ruled all of that out and still want smarter or more personalized cross-selling, that's a reasonable case for a dedicated app rather than pushing the native block further than it's meant to go.
