Why is Shopify suddenly demanding I pay for POS Pro out of nowhere?
An upgrade screen replaced my usual POS settings page with no warning - here is what actually causes that and how to check before you pay anything.
What's going on
One day your Shopify POS settings work exactly like always, and the next, opening that same settings page shows a full-screen upgrade pitch instead of your configuration. No email, no warning banner counting down - the screen you use every week just gets replaced by a sales page. Merchants describe this as feeling like a bait and switch: they set up POS once, used it for weeks or months, and then suddenly hit a wall demanding payment to see settings that used to be free.
In reality, this is almost always tied to Shopify's POS trial and per-location billing structure, not a random or punitive change. Shopify POS has a free Lite tier included with every Shopify plan, and a paid Pro tier billed separately for each location that uses it. When a location is first set up for in-person selling, Shopify commonly grants a free trial of Pro so the merchant can try the more advanced features before committing to pay. When that trial period ends without an active Pro subscription on the location, the location reverts to Lite, and any settings page that depends on a Pro-only feature gets swapped for an upgrade prompt instead of showing the now-inaccessible configuration underneath.
Why it happens
Shopify's POS Pro add-on is billed per location on top of your base Shopify plan, and it's common for a location to start on a free Pro trial rather than defaulting straight to the paid tier. Because the trial is scoped to that specific location and isn't flagged loudly in the interface as it winds down, merchants who aren't watching for a trial-end notice can be caught off guard weeks or months later when it lapses.
When the trial ends, Shopify doesn't delete your settings - it restricts access to the parts of the interface gated behind Pro (fuller staff permissions, advanced inventory tools, omnichannel returns, reporting) and shows an upgrade page in their place. If the settings screen you rely on happens to depend on any Pro-only capability, the whole page can appear to be replaced by the paywall rather than just a single feature being greyed out, which is why it can feel like the entire settings area vanished.
5 ways to fix it
Check whether your free POS Pro trial just ended
When a location is first set up for in-person selling, Shopify commonly starts it on a free trial of POS Pro so you can try the advanced features before paying. When that trial lapses without an active paid subscription, the location quietly drops back to the free POS Lite tier, and screens that depend on Pro features get replaced with an upgrade prompt instead of your usual settings. In Shopify admin, look at your locations and plan settings to see which POS tier each location is currently on and whether a trial end date is listed. This is the most common cause of a paywall appearing out of nowhere.
Confirm which plan each location actually needs before paying again
POS Pro is billed separately for each location on top of your regular Shopify subscription, and it unlocks things like more flexible staff permissions, fuller inventory tools, omnichannel returns and exchanges, clienteling, and retail-specific reporting. POS Lite, included free with every Shopify plan, covers basic in-person payment acceptance and simpler staff access. If your store never actually used any Pro-only feature, don't assume you must pay to clear the screen - confirm first whether you need Pro at all, since resubscribing per location costs money and isn't the only way to get past this.
Rule out a staff permissions issue before assuming it's billing
Sometimes what looks like a billing paywall is really a staff permissions issue: a POS staff account without sufficient admin or location access can be shown a locked or upsell-style screen even when the store itself is correctly subscribed to POS Pro. Log in as the store owner or a staff account with full admin access and see whether the same screen still appears. If it doesn't, the problem is that staff member's permission level, not your plan or billing status.
Re-enable POS Pro for that specific location if you do need it
If you've confirmed you genuinely rely on Pro-only features and the trial has simply ended, you can re-add the POS Pro subscription for that location from your Shopify admin's plan or billing settings. Because this billing is scoped per location, adding a new location later, or wanting Pro features somewhere new, requires actively subscribing that location again - it isn't inherited automatically from another location or from your overall Shopify plan tier, which is why merchants are often caught off guard well after their initial setup.
Contact Shopify Support if the timing still doesn't add up
If the trial end date shown in your admin doesn't match what you remember from setup, or you believe you were already paying for POS Pro on that location, contact Shopify Support through the Help Center in your admin and ask them to pull up the billing and trial history for that specific location. They can see exact trial start and end dates and any plan changes on the account that aren't fully visible from the settings screens alone.
Bottom line
Most reports of a POS Pro paywall showing up "out of nowhere" trace back to a free trial quietly expiring on a specific location, not a bug or a bait and switch, so check that location's plan status and trial date before paying anything. If you don't actually rely on the Pro-only features, such as advanced staff permissions, deeper inventory tools, or omnichannel returns, staying on free POS Lite is a perfectly reasonable choice. This is a billing and plan configuration question, not something a third-party app can resolve for you.
