Why does Shopify hide the SKU on my orders instead of showing it clearly?

Shopify's order detail page tucks SKU into tiny, easy-to-miss text under each line item, and the Orders list doesn't show it as a column at all — here's how to get a real, readable SKU list for packing and fulfillment.

What's going on

"Why does Shopify bury the SKU on every order? I'm trying to pack 30 orders a morning and I have to squint at tiny gray text under each product name just to find the SKU — there's no column for it, no way to make it bigger, nothing." Merchants who fulfill orders manually run into this constantly: the Orders list (the table view of all orders) shows product names and quantities, but not SKU, because a single order can contain multiple line items with different SKUs — there's no one-to-one value to put in a list column.

On the individual order detail page, each line item does show its SKU, but it's rendered as small, muted secondary text directly under the product and variant name — a deliberate visual hierarchy choice (product name is the primary information, SKU is supporting detail) that works fine for a single order but becomes a real slowdown and a genuine low-contrast/small-text accessibility problem when you're scanning many orders quickly for warehouse picking or packing.

Why it happens

Shopify's order detail UI treats SKU as secondary metadata beneath the product/variant name by design, using smaller and lower-contrast type — a standard information-hierarchy pattern that assumes someone reads one order at a time, not someone rapid-scanning dozens of orders for picking.

The Orders list/table view has a fixed, customizable set of columns (things like channel, payment status, fulfillment status, tags), but SKU isn't one of the available options, because an order's line items can each carry a different SKU and the list is built around one row per order, not one row per item.

5 ways to fix it

1

Turn on the SKU column in the CSV export for a proper picking list

Go to Orders, select the orders you need (or filter by unfulfilled status), then Export > Export orders. The export includes a "Lineitem sku" column for every line, one row per item, so you get a flat, sortable list with quantities and SKUs side by side. Open it in Google Sheets or Excel and sort by SKU to build a real picking list instead of scrolling through the order screen.

2

Use Shopify's built-in packing slips instead of the order screen

From the Orders list, select orders and choose More actions > Print packing slips (or open a single order and use Print packing slip from the ... menu). The packing slip template shows SKU next to each line item in plain, readable text and is meant for exactly this warehouse/fulfillment use case. If your slip is missing SKU or looks cluttered, the template can be edited in Settings > Custom order status/notifications for stores on plans with Order Printer template access.

3

Zoom in or increase browser text size on the order detail page

The SKU line on an individual order's line items is intentionally set in a small, muted font under the product/variant name, which is the actual accessibility complaint many merchants raise. Using your browser's zoom (Ctrl/Cmd +) or OS-level text scaling makes it easier to read without any settings change in Shopify, and it's worth flagging to Shopify support as a legitimate low-contrast/small-text accessibility issue via the admin's Help/feedback option so it gets tracked.

4

Standardize on SKUs merchants can actually scan at a glance

Part of the frustration is that when SKUs are long, inconsistent, or duplicated across variants, the small SKU text becomes unreadable and error-prone even at full size. Auditing your SKU scheme (short, consistent prefixes per product type) under Products > variants makes the same small text far easier to parse quickly during fulfillment, independent of any Shopify UI change.

5

For daily high-volume picking, look at fulfillment/inventory apps

If you're fulfilling dozens of orders a day, apps built around picking and packing (many free-tier Shopify App Store options exist alongside paid ones) show consolidated pick lists across multiple open orders, which the native admin doesn't do at all. This is worth exploring only if the export/packing-slip workaround above isn't fast enough for your volume.

Bottom line

There's no single Shopify setting that makes SKU details bigger or more prominent on the order screen itself — the fastest native fixes are exporting orders to CSV (which includes a clean Lineitem SKU column) or printing packing slips, both of which are built for exactly this fulfillment workflow. If you're doing this daily at real volume, a dedicated picking/packing app is worth a look before building a habit around manual exports; BesPoP doesn't have an app specifically for this.
