Why is my Shopify checkout showing no shipping rates for some customers?

When checkout shows no delivery options at all, it is almost never a Shopify outage. It is a gap in how zones, rates, or shipping profiles are configured.

What's going on

Customers reach the shipping step at checkout and see nothing to select: no rates, no couriers, sometimes just a message that shipping is not available to their address. Screenshots land in the merchant's inbox or a support ticket, but from the admin side everything looks fine. Shipping rates exist, the store has sold to that country before, and nothing in the settings appears to have changed.

This is a common, recurring issue on Shopify's community forums, and it is rarely a platform wide bug. Shopify's shipping calculation depends on several things lining up at once for a given cart: the destination address has to fall inside a configured shipping zone, the cart's weight or price has to fall inside a rate's defined range, and the specific products in the cart have to be stocked at a location included in the shipping profile that covers that zone. If any one of those does not line up, checkout shows no options rather than a generic fallback rate.

Why it happens

Shopify's shipping engine is profile based: each shipping profile links specific products, by way of specific inventory locations, to specific zones and rates. As stores add products, change fulfillment locations, split inventory across warehouses, or start selling to new countries, it is easy for a subset of products or destinations to fall outside every configured rate without any error surfacing in the admin.

Weight based and price based rates only fire within the numeric ranges you set, so a heavier cart, a bulk order, or a product missing a weight value can silently fall through every bracket. Carrier calculated rates add another failure point, since they depend on a live, successful call to the carrier at checkout time. An expired credential or an unsupported destination can return zero rates instead of a visible error.

5 ways to fix it

1

Confirm the customer's address actually falls inside a configured shipping zone

In Shopify admin, go to Settings, then Shipping and delivery, and open each shipping profile to check which countries and regions each zone covers. It is common to set a rate for a broad zone like Rest of World but leave a specific country or region without any rate, or to create overlapping zones where the more specific one has no rates defined. If a customer's address does not match any zone that has at least one rate, checkout will show no shipping options at all.

2

Check that every rate's weight, price, or item conditions actually cover this cart

Weight based and price based rates only apply within the minimum and maximum range you set for them. If a cart's total weight or subtotal falls outside every rate's range in that zone, for example if your rates stop at 10kg and an order weighs 12kg, checkout shows no options rather than falling back to a default rate. Review each rate's conditions, and confirm that every product involved has a weight set if you are using weight based shipping, since a missing weight can push an item outside every bracket.

3

Make sure the product ships from a location covered by the right shipping profile, and is set up as a physical product

Shipping rates are tied to shipping profiles, and each profile is tied to specific inventory locations. If an item in the cart is only stocked at a location that is not included in the profile covering the customer's zone, or sits on a custom profile that never got zones or rates configured, no rate will show even though rates exist elsewhere in your settings. It is also worth checking that the product is not marked as a digital good, service, or gift card, and that its physical product and weight settings have not been left unchecked or blank, since Shopify will not calculate shipping for items it does not treat as physical.

4

If you use carrier calculated rates, check the carrier connection and package settings

Real time carrier rates from services like USPS or UPS depend on a live call to the carrier at checkout. If your store's default package dimensions or weight are missing or unrealistic, if a carrier account's credentials have lapsed, or if the destination falls outside what that carrier services, the request can come back with no rates instead of a visible error. Check your carrier account settings in Shipping and delivery, and keep at least one flat or price based rate in the same zone as a fallback so checkout does not dead end if the live carrier lookup fails.

5

Test checkout yourself with the exact address and cart contents customers are reporting

Recreate the issue at your live storefront checkout, not just an internal preview, using the specific country, address, and products mentioned in the complaint or screenshot. This is the fastest way to confirm which of the above is actually happening for a given case, since a no rates error can have a different root cause for different countries or products within the same store.

Bottom line

Missing shipping rates almost always trace back to a gap in zone coverage, rate conditions, or shipping profile and location setup rather than a Shopify outage, so working through Settings, Shipping and delivery methodically resolves most cases without installing anything. Stores juggling many custom shipping profiles across multiple locations and international markets tend to benefit more from a one time shipping configuration audit, the kind of setup review a Shopify agency like BesPoP can do, than from adding another app, since the underlying issue is almost always misconfiguration rather than missing functionality.
