Why does my order tracking freeze after it crosses into another country?
International orders often sit at in transit for days after crossing into the destination country. Here's why the handoff between carriers breaks tracking, and how to fix or work around it.
What's going on
My international customers keep messaging me asking why their order has said in transit for a week with no updates, meanwhile the package is probably already at their local post office. This is one of the most common cross-border fulfillment complaints, and it's rarely a bug in Shopify itself. It happens when a shipment changes hands partway through its journey: your carrier, 3PL, or freight consolidator hands the package to a different last-mile carrier once it clears customs in the destination country, and that second carrier's scan events never make it back to Shopify's order status page.
The result is a tracking timeline that just stops. The customer sees the last scan from the international leg, assumes the order is lost or stuck, and opens a support ticket or leaves a bad review, even though the package may already be out for delivery. This is especially common for orders fulfilled through 3PLs, dropshipping suppliers, or cross-border programs where a delivery partner handles the final leg using its own carrier network.
Why it happens
Shopify's order status page auto-updates tracking only for carriers it recognizes, generally matched by the pattern of the tracking number and the carrier set on the fulfillment. When a package changes carriers mid-journey, for example an international courier handing off to a country's national postal service or a regional last-mile partner, that second carrier is often unmapped, misidentified as Other, or simply outside what Shopify supports, especially for smaller or regional carriers. Scans from that second leg never reach the order timeline, even though the package is still moving normally.
This is structurally common in 3PL and cross-border fulfillment setups because two or three systems all have to agree on one tracking number and one carrier identity: your 3PL's warehouse system, the international carrier, and the local delivery partner. If any link in that chain reports the tracking number or carrier name inconsistently, the automated match breaks and the update stops flowing, even though nothing is actually wrong with the shipment.
5 ways to fix it
Confirm the destination-country carrier is one Shopify actually tracks
Shopify's order status page only auto-updates tracking for carriers it can recognize, generally by matching the tracking number's format to a known carrier. Small regional posts, customs brokers, and last-mile partners used in cross-border handoffs often aren't recognized, so their scans never reach Shopify even though the package is still moving. Open the order in Shopify admin, check what carrier is attached to the fulfillment, then paste the tracking number into the destination country's own postal or delivery site, not just the international carrier's site, to see if newer scans exist that Shopify never picked up. A fulfillment carrier listed as Other is usually the tell.
Fix the carrier mapping at the fulfillment step
If your 3PL or freight forwarder hands packages to a regional last-mile carrier, such as a country's national postal service, make sure the fulfillment gets tagged with a carrier Shopify recognizes, or at least with a correct tracking URL, instead of a generic label. When fulfilling manually or through the API, set the carrier explicitly rather than leaving it blank or as Other. This costs nothing and often closes the gap without changing your process.
Push a status update yourself while tracking is stuck mid-transit
The gap sits between two carriers' systems, not inside Shopify, so the most reliable fix available today is proactive communication: add an order note, send a follow-up email, or otherwise let the customer know around the point where you know the handoff happens. This doesn't restore live tracking, but it closes the trust gap that turns into support tickets and bad reviews, and you can do it with tools you already have.
Add a tracking-aggregator app if this happens on most international orders
If the gap shows up on most cross-border shipments rather than as an occasional glitch, a dedicated tracking or post-purchase app can often detect the correct regional carrier from the tracking number and stitch the multi-leg journey into one timeline, including the leg your 3PL and Shopify both miss. This is worth the app-store browse when the handoff gap is structural to your shipping route, not a one-off.
Get a straight answer from your 3PL on who owns tracking updates
Ask your 3PL or freight forwarder directly who is responsible for pushing scan events back to you after international handoff, and on what schedule. Some only sync tracking once a day, or only pass along the first-leg number and expect you to look up the local leg yourself. If that's what's happening, the fix is a process or SLA conversation with your logistics partner, not a Shopify setting.
Bottom line
There's no single Shopify setting that fixes cross-border tracking gaps, because the problem lives in the handoff between carrier systems, not in your store. Start free: correct the carrier mapping at fulfillment and get ahead of the silence with a manual note or email. If the gap is a recurring pattern across most international orders, a tracking-aggregator app or a firmer SLA with your 3PL is the real fix, not a checkout or theme change.
