Why does Google Merchant Center keep showing the wrong link for my products?

Merchant Center is flagging or displaying incorrect product URLs even though your storefront works fine when you click through. Here's how to actually track down the mismatch.

What's going on

You check Merchant Center and Google is showing the wrong URL for one or more products, maybe an old domain, a stale handle, a collection page instead of the product page, or a link that 404s, even though clicking through from your own storefront works perfectly. It's confusing because nothing looks broken on the store itself, so it feels like Google or the feed is simply wrong.

In reality, the product feed that Shopify's Google & YouTube channel sends to Merchant Center is built from your storefront's canonical URLs, and Google doesn't always recrawl and refresh that data the moment something changes on your end. The gap between your storefront being live and correct and what Google has on file is where this problem lives, and it can be caused by several things stacking up at once: a delayed feed sync, an incorrect canonical tag coming from your theme or an app, an old domain or handle that isn't properly redirected, or a Shopify Markets setup pointing Google at the wrong regional URL.

Because the symptom looks the same regardless of cause, merchants often assume it's a Shopify bug in the feed and go looking for an app to fix it, when the actual fix is almost always a specific setting: a canonical tag override, a missing redirect, a stale domain claim, or simply waiting out a sync.

Why it happens

Shopify's Google & YouTube channel generates your product feed from each product's canonical URL and pushes it to Merchant Center on its own sync schedule. That process is not instantaneous, so a recent domain change, handle change, or redirect fix can take time to show up correctly on Google's side, and Google's own crawl cycle adds another layer of lag on top of that.

Separately, the canonical tag on your actual product page is what Google treats as ground truth for a URL. Themes, translation or localization apps, and some page builders can override that tag incorrectly, pointing it at a collection, an old handle, or the wrong locale, which produces a real mismatch that has nothing to do with feed timing and won't resolve itself with a resync.

5 ways to fix it

1

Check whether the Google & YouTube channel feed has actually finished syncing

In your Shopify admin, open the Google & YouTube sales channel and look at the product sync status. Shopify pushes your product data to Merchant Center on its own schedule, not instantly, so a domain change, handle change, or redirect fix you made recently may simply not have propagated to the feed yet. Before assuming anything is broken, check the specific error against each affected product in Merchant Center's Diagnostics tab rather than going only off the channel-level summary.

2

View source on the actual product page and check the canonical tag

Open a few of the flagged products on your live storefront and look at the link rel canonical tag in the page source. Custom themes, translation apps, and some page-builder or SEO apps can override the default canonical logic, and it's common for the canonical to end up pointing at a collection URL, a stale handle, or the wrong locale instead of the product's own primary URL. Google treats that tag as the authoritative link, so if it's wrong, the feed will look wrong to Google even though the page renders correctly in your browser.

3

Audit your domain and redirect setup

In Settings, confirm which domain is set as your primary domain, and in your store's URL redirect settings, confirm that any old domains, changed handles, or migrated URLs redirect with a permanent (301) redirect to the current live URL, with no redirect chains. If you recently changed your primary domain or migrated platforms, Google can keep serving links tied to the old URL for a stretch of time until it recrawls, so it's worth ruling out a weak or missing redirect before assuming this is a Shopify bug.

4

Check your Shopify Markets or multi-language URL structure

If you sell through Shopify Markets with country-specific subfolders or subdomains, verify that each market's URLs line up with what's actually submitted to Merchant Center. A mismatched regional URL, or a market unexpectedly resolving to the default locale, is a common cause of Google logging a URL mismatch against a product that loads fine when you click it yourself.

5

Re-verify and re-claim your domain in Merchant Center

If the issue still isn't clear after checking the feed, canonical tags, and redirects, go into Merchant Center's business and website settings and re-run the domain verification and claim process. Ownership claims can fall out of sync after a domain or theme change, and Google may keep showing stale URL data until the claim is refreshed. This step lives entirely on Google's side, not in anything Shopify controls.

Bottom line

This is almost always a mismatch between what Google has cached and what your store is actually serving right now, whether that's a delayed sync, an overridden canonical tag, or an incomplete redirect setup, rather than a bug in Shopify's feed generation. Work through Merchant Center's Diagnostics tab error by error instead of treating "feed is wrong" as one problem, and don't rely on your own storefront looking fine as proof the canonical tags are correct. This is a verification and configuration task you can resolve with Shopify's native settings and Google's own tools; there's no app you need to buy to fix it.
