Why does my Google feed say it's active when half my products are still limited?
A green source status in Shopify's Google channel only confirms the connection is working. It says nothing about whether Google is actually approving and fully serving your individual products.
What's going on
A merchant's Google & YouTube sales channel in Shopify shows everything green: the feed is connected, syncing, and reporting no errors. But products aren't getting full visibility in Google Shopping. Some are missing from search results entirely, others show a limited-performance flag, and nothing in the Shopify app itself points to a specific cause.
This is a common source of confusion because Shopify's channel app and Google Merchant Center are two different systems reporting two different things. The Shopify side confirms that your product data is reaching Google successfully. It does not evaluate whether Google is happy with the contents of that data. Item-level approval, disapproval, and limited status live entirely inside Google Merchant Center's own diagnostics, which most merchants never open because the Shopify app doesn't surface it directly.
The result is a merchant staring at a green checkmark in Shopify while actual product performance is being throttled by Google for reasons invisible from inside Shopify admin, usually missing product identifiers or a mismatch between what the feed says and what the live product page shows.
Why it happens
Shopify's Google & YouTube channel app is a connector. Its job is to keep your catalog synced to Google Merchant Center and report whether that sync is succeeding. It isn't a proxy for Google's own content-quality review, which happens after the data arrives and is entirely Google's call.
Because of that split, feed health (is data reaching Google) and item diagnostics (is Google approving what it received) are genuinely two different systems in two different places. A feed can be perfectly healthy and still have most of its items throttled because of per-product data gaps, most often a missing GTIN, MPN, or brand identifier, or a live price or availability mismatch between the storefront and what was submitted.
5 ways to fix it
Check Google Merchant Center's own diagnostics, not the Shopify channel's status
In Shopify's Google & YouTube app, the sales channel status only confirms that your product feed is connected and syncing. It does not report whether individual products are approved. Go to Google Merchant Center directly and open the Diagnostics view under Products. It breaks issues into account-level, feed-level, and per-item problems, each flagged as an error, warning, or notice with a specific issue code attached to the affected products. That code, not the app's summary tile, tells you what is actually wrong.
Fill in missing GTIN, MPN, or brand
A missing product identifier is the most common cause of a limited-performance warning on an otherwise healthy feed. Google expects a GTIN (barcode) for every product, or MPN plus brand if no GTIN exists. In Shopify, add the barcode on each variant and make sure the Vendor field is filled in, since it maps to brand. If a product genuinely has no manufacturer identifier, mark it that way rather than leaving the field blank, since a blank field reads to Google as missing data rather than confirmed absence.
Make sure price and availability match between your storefront and your feed
Google periodically recrawls your product pages and compares live price and availability against what your feed reports. A mismatch, such as a product marked in stock in the feed but sold out on the page, or a sale price not reflected on the storefront, triggers a mismatch warning even when the feed connection itself is fine. Check that your theme renders price and inventory correctly and that caching or app-injected pricing isn't hiding the current values from Google's crawler.
Use a Merchant Center feed rule only as a last resort
If part of your catalog genuinely has no GTIN, such as custom or handmade goods, Merchant Center lets you mark those specific products as having no identifier so Google stops penalizing them for a missing one. Apply this only to the products that truly lack an identifier. Using it across your whole catalog just to silence warnings suppresses a real data signal Google uses for ranking, and can hurt visibility more than it helps.
Resync the feed after fixes and allow a day or two
Corrections to identifiers, prices, or availability don't show up in diagnostics instantly. Use the resync or resubmit option in Shopify's Google channel, and request a fetch on the feed in Merchant Center if that option is available to you. Diagnostics typically update within a day or two, so give it that window before assuming a fix didn't take.
Bottom line
A green status in Shopify's Google channel is a connection indicator, not a quality score. It stays green even while most of your catalog is throttled for missing data, because it was never designed to report on item-level approval. The real diagnosis lives one level down, inside Google Merchant Center's own Diagnostics view. Work the specific per-item issue codes there, mainly identifiers and price or availability mismatches, before touching feed rules, and you'll usually clear it without needing any third-party feed tool.
