Why won't DSer let me set my imported product as the default?
Untangling Shopify's product status, default variant, and DSer's supplier mapping so an imported listing finally behaves the way you expect.
What's going on
You imported a product through DSer, but when you try to mark it, or one of its variants, as the default, nothing happens. The option is greyed out, does not save, or the product still does not show the way you expect on your storefront. This trips up a lot of merchants new to dropshipping through DSer, because default can mean at least three different things depending on where you are looking.
In Shopify itself, there is no single global default product flag. What exists is a default variant, the first variant in your list, which controls the price, image, and availability shown by default on the product page and in collection grids, plus a product status of Draft, Active, or Archived, and per-channel publishing. Separately, DSer has its own internal notion of a default supplier, meaning which AliExpress listing DSer treats as the authoritative source for price, stock, and order fulfillment when a single Shopify SKU has more than one supplier linked to it. Merchants often expect the DSer default-supplier toggle to behave like a Shopify setting, and get stuck when it is greyed out or unresponsive.
Sorting out which of these three things you are actually trying to change is the key to fixing it quickly, and most of the time the underlying blocker is a plain Shopify setting rather than an app bug.
Why it happens
Shopify's data model separates product from variant from publishing state, and none of those layers has a literal field called default product. A product's visible behavior is really the sum of its status, whether it is Active and not Archived, its channel publishing, whether it is turned on for Online Store, POS, and any other channels you use, and, for products with options like size or color, which variant sits first in the list and therefore acts as the default. Merchants coming from simpler platforms sometimes expect one master toggle and are surprised to find it is actually three separate settings.
DSer adds another layer on top. Because a single Shopify product or SKU can be linked to more than one AliExpress supplier, useful for price comparison or backup sourcing, DSer needs its own concept of which linked supplier is currently active for pricing and fulfillment sync. That supplier-level default is managed entirely inside the DSer app and has nothing to do with Shopify's product status or variant order, but because both use the word default, it is easy to click the wrong control and get confused when it does not do what you expected.
Duplicate or orphaned imports make this worse. If a product got imported twice, for example through a re-import or a search for a similar supplier, DSer's default-supplier logic may only apply cleanly to one of the copies, leaving the other looking stuck no matter what you click.
5 ways to fix it
Check the product's status and channel publishing first
Before touching any DSer setting, open the product in Shopify Admin under Products and confirm two things: the status is set to Active (not Draft or Archived), and the product is published to every sales channel you actually sell on, such as Online Store or POS, in the Publishing section of the product page. A product stuck in Draft, or simply unpublished from a channel, will never display the way you expect on your storefront, and this is by far the most common reason a freshly imported product seems to misbehave. Checking this costs nothing and requires no app.
Confirm which variant Shopify treats as the default
Shopify does not have a single global default product toggle. What it has is a default variant, the one whose price, image, and availability show first on the product page and in search or collection previews. That is normally just the first variant in the list, which follows the order of your product options such as Color or Size. If DSer imported variants in an order you do not want, reordering the option values on the product edit page changes which variant is treated as first. This is a Shopify setting, not a DSer one, and it is also free.
Resolve the supplier-level default inside DSer
If what you are actually trying to change is which supplier link DSer uses to sync price, stock, and fulfillment for a given SKU, that setting lives inside DSer's own product or variant mapping screen, not in Shopify. This situation typically comes up when a product has more than one supplier mapped to it. DSer generally allows only one supplier per SKU to be marked active; if the option is greyed out, a common cause is that another supplier is already flagged active for that variant, an order is still mid-fulfillment against the current supplier, or the mapping has not fully synced yet. Unlinking the conflicting supplier or waiting for a pending sync to finish usually clears it.
Rule out a duplicate or orphaned import
A frequent trap with DSer, and with import apps generally, is ending up with two copies of the same product in Shopify, one from the original import and one from a re-import or a similar-product search, where DSer's default-supplier logic only cleanly applies to whichever copy it currently considers linked. If you suspect this, search your product list by title or SKU for duplicates, decide which copy is the one you actually want to keep, remove or unpublish the other, and recheck the default toggle on the surviving product.
Contact DSer support if the setting still will not apply
If status, publishing, variant order, and duplicates all check out and the set as default option in DSer still will not save, this points to app-specific behavior, or a bug, rather than anything wrong with your store configuration. DSer's in-app help chat or the support link on its Shopify App Store listing is the fastest route to a fix, since the supplier-default logic is specific to how DSer manages the link between AliExpress and Shopify and can change between app versions.
Bottom line
Most reports of a DSer product refusing to be set as default trace back to an ordinary Shopify setting, product status, channel publishing, or variant order, rather than anything actually broken in the app, so it is worth working through those free, native checks first. If it turns out to be a genuine supplier-mapping conflict inside DSer, that is something only DSer's own support team can resolve, since it depends on their proprietary sync logic and is not something a general Shopify app or theme change can fix.
