A customer swears they left a review, but it's nowhere on my product page
A customer says they left a review, but it's nowhere on the product page. Here's why review apps hold new submissions back by default, and how to find and release them.
What's going on
A customer emails or comments to say they left a product review, but when you check the product page, it's simply not there. No error, no trace, just missing. It's a confusing moment: did the review get lost? Did your theme break? Is the app broken?
In the overwhelming majority of cases, nothing is broken. Shopify's storefront doesn't have a single review system built into every theme; reviews are handled by whichever review app you've installed, whether that's a third-party app like Judge.me, Loox, Yotpo, Ali Reviews, or Okendo, or a leftover installation of Shopify's own Product Reviews app, which Shopify has since discontinued. Most of these apps ship with moderation on by default: every new submission goes into a private pending or unapproved queue in the app dashboard first, and it won't appear on your storefront until a staff member manually approves it.
That default exists to protect merchants from spam, abusive language, or reviews landing on the wrong product automatically, but it also means a genuinely happy customer's review can sit invisible for days or weeks if nobody's checking the queue or the app's new-submission email alerts are broken or going unnoticed.
Why it happens
Review apps are built around a moderation-first workflow: new submissions default to a hidden pending status specifically so spam, off-topic content, and abusive language can't reach your storefront unchecked. This is standard behavior across nearly every review app on the Shopify App Store, not a bug specific to any one of them.
The disconnect happens because merchants often don't realize moderation is even turned on, especially if they installed the app long ago or inherited the store from someone else. Combine that with notification settings that are misconfigured, pointed at a stale address, or filtered into spam, and pending reviews can pile up for a long time without anyone noticing they're waiting on a decision.
5 ways to fix it
Check the moderation or pending queue before assuming anything is broken
Open your review app's dashboard and look for a tab labeled something like Pending, Unapproved, or Moderation, separate from Published or All reviews. Most Shopify review apps, including the now-discontinued native Product Reviews app, hold new submissions here by default until a staff member approves them. A review that seems to have vanished has almost always just landed in that separate queue rather than being lost.
Turn on auto-publish if you don't need to screen reviews manually
Most review apps, including Judge.me, Loox, Yotpo, Ali Reviews, and Okendo, offer a setting in their general or moderation settings, often called Auto-publish or Auto-approve, that makes new submissions go live immediately instead of sitting in a queue. If your only goal is to stop reviews from getting stuck rather than to screen them for spam or quality, this is the simplest fix and costs nothing extra.
Fix your notification settings so new submissions don't go unnoticed
When pending reviews pile up silently, it's usually because the app's new-review email alerts are turned off, pointed at an old staff address, or landing in a spam folder. Check the app's notification settings, confirm the address is current, and whitelist the sender so future alerts actually reach your inbox.
Check whether the storefront widget is filtering reviews separately from moderation
Some apps apply a second layer of filtering on the display widget itself, such as only showing reviews above a certain star rating, only ones with photos, or capping how many appear per product. A review can be approved in your moderation queue and still be invisible on the product page because the widget's display settings are excluding it, so it's worth checking those too.
Ask the customer to resubmit if you truly can't find the review anywhere
If you've checked every tab and setting and still can't locate it, the submission may have failed silently, which can happen with a slow connection or an ad blocker interfering with the review form. In that case, the fastest fix is asking the customer to submit it again and confirming with them once it shows up in your pending queue.
Bottom line
This is almost always a workflow issue, not a bug: the review is sitting exactly where the app designed it to sit, waiting for someone to approve it. Start by finding the moderation or pending tab in whichever review app you use, decide whether manual approval is something you actually want (most merchants don't need it and can safely switch to auto-publish), and fix your notification emails so this doesn't happen again. No new app purchase is needed here, just a settings check within the review app you already have.
