My customer never got their account invite email. Where do I even start?
If customers say they never got their account invite, it's usually a notification template or account mode issue, not a broken store. Here's how to track it down.
What's going on
A customer says they signed up or were invited to create an account on your store, but the invite email never showed up, not in their inbox, not in spam. Their profile in your Shopify admin looks normal, like the invite went out, but nothing ever arrives on the other end, and you're left guessing whether it's your store, their email provider, or a setting you don't know about.
This gets confusing because Shopify offers two different customer account systems, and which one a store uses affects whether an invite email exists at all in the form you're expecting. Classic accounts use a traditional email and password invite and reset flow. The newer customer accounts system authenticates with a one-time sign-in code sent at login instead. Templates for both live under the same notification settings, which makes it easy to edit or disable the wrong one, or to assume an email should exist when the account mode in use was never going to send one that way.
Why it happens
The two customer account systems behave differently. Classic accounts send a distinct invite email when a merchant manually invites a customer or a customer registers. The newer customer accounts system instead authenticates with one-time sign-in codes sent at the moment of login, rather than a standalone invite. If a merchant expects the classic flow but the store is on the newer system, or the reverse, the email they're waiting for was never going to be sent in that form.
Separately, the notification template controlling this email can be disabled, broken by an edit, or overridden by a third-party app that runs its own customer account flow, any of which will silently stop the email from going out even though the customer's record looks normal.
Plain deliverability problems, like spam filtering, sender authentication issues, or a flagged sending domain, can also suppress emails that Shopify genuinely sent. That looks identical to a settings problem from the merchant's side but needs a different fix.
5 ways to fix it
Check the notification template before assuming the customer's inbox is at fault
In your admin, go to Settings, then Notifications, and find the customer account invitation email in the list. Confirm it hasn't been disabled or edited into a broken state, then open it and send yourself a test copy. If the test never arrives either, the problem is on the sending side, not the customer's end, and you can rule out spam filters or typos right away.
Confirm which customer account setup the store is actually using
Shopify stores can run either classic customer accounts or the newer customer accounts system, and the two handle sign-in differently: classic accounts send a traditional email/password invite, while the newer system authenticates with a one-time code sent at the moment someone tries to log in rather than a standalone invite email. If you're expecting one behavior but the store is configured for the other, you're waiting on an email that was never going to be sent that way. Check Settings under Customer accounts to see which mode is active before you spend more time on the notification itself.
Resend the invite manually and rule out typos or duplicate accounts
Open the customer's profile under Customers and look for an option to resend or send the account invite directly, rather than waiting for it to trigger automatically. While you're there, double check the email address for typos, and confirm the customer doesn't already have an account tied to that address, since Shopify won't send a fresh invite in some of those cases.
Treat it as a deliverability problem if it's happening to more than one customer
A correctly sent invite can still get caught by spam filters or rejected by the receiving mail server, especially with providers like Outlook or Yahoo, or corporate email systems that enforce strict authentication checks. Ask the affected customer to check their spam or junk folder and any secondary inbox tabs. If several customers are reporting the same problem rather than just one, treat it as a store-wide email deliverability issue tied to your sending domain reputation rather than a one-off settings problem.
Check for an app that's quietly taking over account creation
If you run apps for loyalty programs, subscriptions, a custom customer portal, or marketing automation, check whether one of them builds its own account or login flow. Some apps intercept account creation and never trigger Shopify's native invite email at all, which looks identical to a missing email from the merchant's side but has nothing to do with your notification settings.
Bottom line
Most missing invite emails trace back to one of two things: the store is running the newer customer accounts system, which doesn't send a classic invite the way merchants expect, or the notification template itself was disabled or edited incorrectly. Check the account mode and notification settings first, since that resolves the majority of cases without installing anything. If the root cause turns out to be broader email deliverability, that's a domain and sender-reputation fix rather than something any app can patch, though a transactional email or deliverability-monitoring app can help you catch the next occurrence faster.
