Why does my Shopify checkout keep splitting into confusing separate shipments?

When checkout splits an order into multiple shipments, often because of a preorder item, the shipping method section can look collapsed and confusing unless a specific setting is on and customers were warned earlier.

What's going on

A merchant notices that when a customer's cart mixes item types, commonly a preorder product alongside something in stock, checkout shows a shipping section that's hard to parse: it isn't obvious the order is being split into separate shipments, what's in each shipment, or why the customer is suddenly picking shipping methods twice. Customers who don't understand why one order is turning into two packages with two shipping charges are more likely to abandon at checkout, or to file a support ticket afterward asking why their order arrived in pieces.

This is Shopify's split shipping behavior, which triggers automatically whenever items in a cart can't be fulfilled together: different availability dates like preorder versus in-stock, different shipping profiles, or inventory held at different locations. Checkout is designed to show a clear 'this order ships in multiple shipments' summary with expandable options per shipment, but whether that clear view actually appears depends on a store-level setting that isn't always turned on, especially on older stores.

Why it happens

Shopify automatically splits an order into multiple shipments whenever the cart mixes items that can't physically ship together in one box, most often a preorder or subscription item next to an in-stock item, but also products on different shipping profiles or held at different fulfillment locations. This is fulfillment logic, not a display bug: checkout is trying to accurately represent a real split.

How clearly that split gets communicated depends on a specific checkout setting, Show split shipping in checkout (Settings, Checkout), which groups shipments into a summary with an expandable view for choosing methods per shipment. This has been on by default for stores created since late summer 2024, but older stores that never revisited the setting fall back to a less legible presentation, which is what reads as collapsed and confusing in merchant reports.

On top of that, checkout gives merchants limited room to add their own explanatory messaging directly inside the shipping step, so if the cart and product pages don't already explain that an order will ship in multiple packages, checkout ends up being the first, and most confusing, place a customer finds out.

5 ways to fix it

1

Turn on the split shipping display setting in checkout

In your Shopify admin, go to Settings, then Checkout, and look for the split shipping option (it only appears once your store has more than one shipping profile or more than one location that can fulfill online orders). Turning on Show split shipping in checkout makes the checkout group each shipment into a clear summary, with the cheapest or fastest option selected by default and a way for customers to expand and choose per shipment. Shopify turned this on by default for stores created after summer 2024, but older stores often still have it off, which is what produces the confusing, over-collapsed shipping view merchants are describing.

2

Understand why the order is splitting before you try to fix the display

Shopify splits an order into multiple shipments whenever items can't ship together in one box, most commonly a preorder or subscription item mixed with in-stock items, but also products assigned to different shipping profiles or stock held at different locations. The checkout is reflecting a real fulfillment split, not a rendering glitch. If a split feels unexpected, check your shipping profiles and where inventory is stocked under Settings, Shipping and delivery, and Settings, Locations; consolidating profiles or inventory can reduce splits you didn't intend, rather than just hiding a confusing summary.

3

Set expectations earlier, on the product and cart page, not just at checkout

Shopify checkout gives you limited room to add your own explanatory copy at the shipping step, so the more reliable fix is to warn customers before they get there: add a line to the product description or a cart page note explaining that preorder items ship separately from in-stock items. This matters most for preorder-heavy carts, since a customer who is surprised by two shipments and two shipping charges at checkout is far more likely to abandon than one who already expected it from the product or cart page.

4

If you use checkout customization tools, some options extend further on Shopify Plus

Checkout UI extensions can add app blocks near the shipping method step, and Shopify has been rolling out extension support specifically for split shipping displays. How much of that you can customize depends on your plan and which extension points are available to you; deeper checkout customization, including full branding control and some layout changes, is generally more available on Shopify Plus. If you're not on Plus, check what your checkout apps actually support before assuming a custom message is out of reach.

5

Treat a genuinely broken shipping widget as a separate issue from the expected split

A normal split-shipment summary is not the same thing as a broken one. If the shipping method section is rendering oddly, for example collapsing to only one option or behaving differently for logged-in versus logged-out customers, that's worth reproducing in an incognito window to confirm it's not just your session or theme cache. If the problem holds up, that looks like a checkout bug rather than a settings issue, and it's worth reporting to Shopify Support with screenshots rather than assuming you're missing a configuration step.

Bottom line

Most complaints about "confusing collapsed shipping packages" turn out to be Shopify's checkout correctly summarizing a legitimate multi-shipment order, usually triggered by a preorder item mixed with in-stock items. The fix is rarely about hunting for a hidden bug: turn on the split shipping display option under Settings, Checkout so the breakdown is clear, and warn customers about the split earlier, on the product or cart page, rather than letting checkout be the first place they learn their order is arriving in two boxes. If you're evaluating apps for this, look for something that adds clear cart or product page messaging rather than anything that tries to rewrite checkout itself.
