Why won't Shopify show real UPS rates at checkout for my Canadian store?
Shopify's native UPS integration for Canadian-origin stores handles label purchases only, live UPS rates at checkout require connecting your own carrier account or a workaround.
What's going on
You've connected UPS in Shopify, but at checkout your Canadian customers only ever see the flat rates or rate table you set up manually, never a live UPS quote based on the actual package weight and destination. You dig through shipping settings looking for a toggle you're missing, but there isn't one: Shopify's built-in UPS integration for stores based in Canada is scoped to purchasing and printing shipping labels after an order is placed. It isn't built to return live rate quotes to the checkout page.
To get real UPS rates quoted to customers in real time, Shopify routes that capability through a separate feature, Third-Party Carrier-Calculated Shipping, which lets you plug in your own carrier account (UPS, FedEx, or others) so Shopify requests a live rate at checkout. That feature has its own plan requirement: it's included on Advanced Shopify and Shopify Plus, and typically available only as a paid add-on on lower-tier plans. That plan gate, layered on top of the label-only native UPS integration, is what leaves merchants stuck without an obvious next step.
Why it happens
Shopify built its native carrier integrations region by region, and the Canadian UPS integration was scoped narrowly to solve label purchasing and fulfillment first; it was never extended to also handle live rate-shopping at checkout the way it has for some other carriers and regions.
Live carrier-rate lookups at checkout are treated by Shopify as a premium capability regardless of which carrier you're connecting, since each live rate request during checkout adds real-time API load. Shopify restricts full access to higher-tier plans or a paid add-on rather than including it everywhere, which is what actually blocks most small and mid-size Canadian merchants, not a UPS-specific restriction.
5 ways to fix it
Check whether you actually need live rates, or just accurate ones
Before chasing a UPS integration, try Shopify's built-in weight-based or price-based shipping rate tables under shipping settings. You can model UPS's published rate charts into a table so customers see close-to-accurate shipping costs without any live API call. This costs nothing, works on every plan, and is genuinely the right fix for stores with predictable box sizes and a handful of shipping zones.
Upgrade to a plan that includes carrier-calculated shipping and connect your UPS account
If you need true live rates that reflect exact weight, dimensions, and your negotiated UPS pricing, the native path is Shopify's Third-Party Carrier-Calculated Shipping feature, which lets you connect your own carrier account so Shopify requests a live rate at checkout. This is included on Advanced Shopify and Shopify Plus; on lower-tier plans it's typically available only as a paid add-on. Once connected, you'll need to enter your UPS account and invoice details for Shopify to authenticate the rate requests.
Consider Canada Post or another supported calculated carrier instead
Canada Post's calculated rates are natively supported for Canadian-origin stores without the same plan friction that live UPS rates run into, and many Canadian merchants use it as their primary checkout carrier while still fulfilling with UPS separately for labels. If your customers don't specifically need UPS-branded rates at checkout, switching your live-rate carrier to Canada Post can solve the underlying problem, accurate real-time shipping costs, without a plan upgrade.
Use a shipping app that layers in UPS rate calculation
Several shipping and rate-calculator apps in the Shopify App Store can pull live UPS rates via UPS's own API and inject them as checkout shipping options on lower-tier plans, working around the native plan requirement. This adds a monthly app cost and another account to manage, so it's worth it mainly if you're committed to staying on a lower plan and specifically need UPS-branded live rates rather than Canada Post or a rate table.
If you only need UPS for outbound labels, you're already covered
Shopify's built-in shipping tools support buying discounted UPS labels for Canadian stores after an order comes in, they just don't quote UPS rates to the customer during checkout. If your actual goal was cheaper UPS labels rather than customer-facing UPS rates, no further setup is needed.
Bottom line
There's no way to show live UPS rates at a Canadian checkout without either connecting your own carrier account through Shopify's Third-Party Carrier-Calculated Shipping (included on Advanced and Plus, an add-on cost below that) or adding a third-party rate-calculator app; Shopify's native Canadian UPS integration is scoped to label purchasing, not checkout quoting. Most Canadian merchants are better served by a well-tuned rate table or by switching their live-rate carrier to Canada Post, which sidesteps the plan requirement entirely. Reach for an app or a plan upgrade only if UPS-branded live rates specifically matter to your customers.
