Why does my Shopify POS card reader keep dropping its Bluetooth connection?
Several times a day, the Bluetooth link between the iPad and the card reader drops mid-shift, forcing staff to re-pair while customers wait. Here's what actually causes it and how to stop relying on Bluetooth for your busiest lane.
What's going on
A merchant runs a busy checkout counter on Shopify POS with a Bluetooth-connected card reader like the BBPOS WisePad 3 or Tap & Chip reader. Several times a day, the reader loses its Bluetooth connection to the iPad or phone mid-transaction, forcing a staff member to stop, re-pair the device, and ask the customer to wait or tap again. On a slow day it's an annoyance; during a rush, it's a line backing up at the register while someone fumbles with Bluetooth settings.
This isn't a one-off glitch report. It shows up as a recurring, multiple-times-a-day pattern, which is the signature of a real environmental or hardware issue rather than a fluke. The question merchants are really asking is whether this is just how Bluetooth card readers behave, or whether there's a way to run a register that doesn't depend on a wireless link staying up all day.
Why it happens
Bluetooth card readers pair to exactly one iPad or Android device at a time over a short-range radio link, and that link is sensitive to distance, obstructions, and interference from other wireless gear near the counter (other Bluetooth peripherals, Wi-Fi access points, even microwave ovens or POS printers). A busy retail environment with a phone, a scale, a Bluetooth barcode scanner, and a receipt printer all sitting near the register is exactly the kind of RF-noisy space where drops happen more often.
Battery state matters too: these readers run on an internal battery, and as it drains, the radio's signal reliability degrades well before the device reports itself as fully dead, causing drops that look random but track the charge cycle. Firmware or app version mismatches between the reader and the Shopify POS app can also cause intermittent reconnects, which is why keeping both updated is part of standard troubleshooting.
None of this is something a Shopify app or checkout setting can fix, because the disconnect happens at the hardware/radio layer, before any transaction data reaches Shopify's software at all.
5 ways to fix it
Switch that register to a wired card reader connection
Both the BBPOS WisePad 3 and the Tap & Chip reader support a wired mode in addition to Bluetooth: on iPad, connect the reader via USB-C through the Shopify POS Hub; on Android, plug it straight in with a USB-C cable. A wired connection cannot drop out the way Bluetooth can, so for a till that takes constant back-to-back transactions, this is the most reliable fix available today and it costs nothing beyond a cable or hub you may already own.
Move to Shopify POS Go for your busiest lane
POS Go is Shopify's all-in-one handheld with a built-in card reader, screen, barcode scanner, and battery, so the payment step never depends on a Bluetooth link between two separate devices in the first place. If one register is the repeat offender for reconnect interruptions, dedicating a POS Go to it removes the failure point entirely rather than working around it.
Clean up the Bluetooth environment around the counter
Repeated multiple-times-a-day drops are a classic symptom of interference or a stale pairing, not a broken reader. Keep the reader within a few feet of the iPad or phone with a clear line of sight, move other Bluetooth accessories (speakers, scales, printers) off the counter, keep the reader's firmware and the Shopify POS app updated, and periodically forget and re-pair the device from the iPad or Android Bluetooth settings rather than just power-cycling the reader.
Keep a charged spare reader in rotation
Bluetooth readers run on an internal battery, and connection drops climb sharply as that battery gets low even when the reader still shows some charge. Keep a second reader charged and ready behind the counter so a flaky unit can be swapped out mid-shift instead of troubleshooting while a line forms, and rotate both readers through a full charge cycle regularly.
Report a pattern, don't just retry it
If drops keep happening on the same reader after trying wired mode, a clean environment, and a charged battery, that points to a hardware fault. Shopify Hardware support can test the specific unit and replace it under warranty if it is defective, which is a better outcome than living with several interruptions a day indefinitely.
Bottom line
There's no setting that makes Bluetooth itself more reliable, but Shopify's own hardware gives you two real ways around it: wire the reader in, or use a built-in-reader device like POS Go so there's no Bluetooth link to drop. Treat those as your first fixes, keep a charged spare on hand for busy shifts, and only escalate to Shopify Hardware support if a specific unit keeps failing after that. This is a hardware reliability problem, not something a checkout or POS app would fix.
