Why won't Shopify POS on Android let my staff set up a PIN?

If the PIN option is missing on Shopify POS for Android, it's usually a staff permission that hasn't been switched on rather than a broken app.

What's going on

A staff member opens the Shopify POS app on an Android device looking for where to set up or change their login PIN, and the option simply isn't there. There's no error message, so there's nothing to screenshot and send to support, which makes it a more confusing problem than an outright crash.

This comes up often enough in Shopify's merchant forums to be a recognizable pattern rather than a one-off glitch. An owner sets up a new staff member, walks them through logging into POS, and then can't find the screen to give that person a PIN for quick device switching. Sometimes it's the owner who can't find it; sometimes it's a staff member who was told they'd be able to set their own PIN and can't.

PIN login exists so multiple staff can share one register without each person doing a full email and password login every time, so when the setting goes missing it blocks a real daily workflow, not just a minor inconvenience.

Why it happens

POS PIN login is tied to a staff member's permission setup in Shopify admin, under Users and permissions, rather than to anything inside the POS app itself. If a staff account hasn't been explicitly granted Point of Sale access, the app has no PIN screen to offer that person, because the account isn't authorized for POS yet, not because of a display bug.

Separately, managing PINs is its own permission layer. Even a staff member who is fully set up for POS may not have the specific access needed to set or reset their own PIN, so only an owner or someone with broader admin rights can do it for them.

Shopify's Android and iOS POS apps don't always receive permission-related updates on the same schedule, so it's possible for a setting to appear, or behave differently, on one platform before the other for a stretch after a change ships. That would explain why this shows up as an Android-specific complaint rather than a general one.

5 ways to fix it

1

Check whether the staff account actually has POS access turned on

In Shopify admin, go to Settings, then Users and permissions, and open the staff member's profile. Confirm they've been granted Point of Sale access as part of their role. If that access isn't enabled, the POS app has nothing to show that person for PIN setup — it isn't a bug, the account just hasn't been provisioned for POS yet. Only the store owner or someone with broad staff-management permissions can turn this on.

2

Confirm you're logged in with a role that can manage PINs

Setting or resetting a staff PIN is generally restricted to owners and staff with elevated permissions, so a staff member can be fully set up to use POS and still not see any way to create their own PIN. Have an owner or admin set the PIN for them from the admin side, or extend that staff member's permissions if you want them to manage it themselves going forward.

3

Update the POS app and do a full log out and back in

Make sure you're on the latest version of the Shopify POS app from the Play Store, then log all the way out and back in rather than just closing and reopening the app. This forces the app to re-fetch the staff member's current permissions from Shopify, which clears up cases where a recent permission change hasn't shown up yet.

4

Remove and re-add the staff member's POS access if it still looks stuck

If permissions look correct in admin but the option still isn't appearing, try removing the staff member's POS access and re-adding it, or sending them a fresh invite. This forces a clean permission sync and can resolve cases that a simple re-login doesn't fix.

5

Contact Shopify Support if nothing above surfaces the setting

If you've confirmed permissions are correct and the option is still missing, mention your Shopify plan and the POS app version when you contact support. They can check your account's configuration directly and tell you whether this is a plan limitation, a permissions issue specific to your account, or an app bug that needs fixing on their end.

Bottom line

This is almost always a staff permissions issue rather than a broken app, and the fix lives in Shopify admin's Users and permissions settings, not in any third-party tool. If you've genuinely ruled out permissions and the PIN option still won't appear on Android, treat it as a possible app bug and loop in Shopify support with your plan and app version.
