Why won't my age verification app show up on my Shopify store?

If your age verification app installs but never shows up, the cause is often your Shopify plan tier, not the app.

What's going on

I installed an age verification app, it says it's active in my admin, but nothing pops up when I actually visit my store. Is my plan just not supported?

This comes up often from merchants on Shopify's cheaper plan tiers. They install an age-gate app expecting a full-screen check before anyone can browse, and either nothing appears, the app's admin shows an error about theme support, or the install instructions reference a theme editor step that doesn't seem to exist for their store.

The cause is usually invisible from inside the app itself: the app assumes every store has a theme with an editor and embed slots to hook into, and that assumption breaks down on plans that don't include a full storefront.

Why it happens

Most age-gate apps integrate by installing into the theme, typically as an app embed that a merchant turns on inside the theme editor. That mechanism only exists for stores that have an actual theme installed with a theme editor to manage it.

Shopify's lowest-cost plan tier is built around product links, a bio-link style page, and Shopify Checkout rather than a full browsable storefront, and doesn't include the Online Store sales channel or theme editor that higher plans have. An app that needs to show an interstitial across storefront pages has no theme to attach to on that plan, regardless of how the app itself is configured.

Separately, even on plans that do include a full Online Store, merchants sometimes still see nothing because the app's embed toggle in the theme editor was never switched on after install. That's a distinct, unrelated cause that produces the same symptom, which is part of why this gets misdiagnosed as a plan problem when it's sometimes just a missed setup step.

5 ways to fix it

1

Confirm what your plan actually includes before troubleshooting the app

Check Settings > Plan in your Shopify admin. Entry-level plans like Starter are built around product links, a bio-link style page, and Shopify Checkout rather than a full browsable storefront, so they don't include the Online Store sales channel or a theme editor. If you don't have a theme editor to open, no age-gate app that installs through the theme has anywhere to attach itself, and that's the first thing to rule out before assuming the app is broken.

2

Upgrade to a plan that includes a full Online Store channel

If you need an age check to appear across your storefront, that requires a plan tier that includes the Online Store channel and theme editor, which Starter does not. This is the most reliable fix, since it gives the app an actual theme to embed into rather than trying to work around the limitation.

3

Check whether the app's embed is switched on in the theme editor

On plans that do include a full Online Store, many age-gate apps install cleanly but still won't display anything until you turn on their app embed inside the theme editor's app embeds section. It's a separate step from installing the app, easy to overlook, and a common reason merchants see "nothing happening" even on a fully compatible plan.

4

Check the app's own plan-compatibility notes before installing

Reputable age verification apps note which Shopify plans they support in their App Store listing or help docs. Before installing, or if something isn't showing up, check that listing or contact the developer with your exact plan name, since compatibility details can be easy to miss and occasionally lag behind changes to Shopify's plan structure.

5

Use a link- or checkout-level restriction as a fallback

If you're staying on a plan without a full storefront, a site-wide interstitial isn't available, but you can still add friction at the point of purchase, for example a warning step before checkout links or being deliberate about which products you share publicly. It's a weaker substitute for a true age gate, but it's a reasonable stopgap without upgrading.

Bottom line

The pattern here usually isn't about which age-gate app a merchant picked, it's that some Shopify plans don't include a full Online Store channel with a theme editor, so any app that relies on installing into a theme has nothing to attach to. If a storefront-wide age check matters to your business, moving to a plan with the Online Store channel is what actually resolves it; if you're staying on a lighter plan, treat age verification as a link- or checkout-level workaround rather than expecting a native pop-up. And on a compatible plan, don't rule out a simple missed setup step, like an app embed that was never turned on, before assuming you need to switch apps or plans at all.
